Doing Your Homework

Watch the video to have these questions answered:

  • How to tell if you're in a good location?
  • How much money do you NEED to live?
  • How many hours a week can you study?

M=MONEY

Entry level QA makes $40-$50K

QA Test Automation makes $50-$65K

Dev's make $50-$65K

Factors:

  • The better you can code AND the better your people skills = the more money you can make.
  • No one hires purely manual testers anymore. You need to know how to code at least a little.

T=TIME

You MUST study 21 hours per week. QA's typically take 4 months to get hired and Dev's around 6 months.

  • If you study 30+ hours a week you can cut these times by one third.
  • I have coached people who were hired in 2 months.

the more you study = quicker you will be hired.

L=LOCATION

Relocate if you are not in a good area.

QA's

  • Go to dice.com and in job title search put QA and your city in location (or closest metro city you can commute to).
  • If there are less than 40 jobs returned by the search, it will be very challenging and it will take much longer than 4 months to land your first job. I would recommend relocating.
  • If there are 40+ jobs you should be able to land a job in a reasonable amount of time but you will need to have above average networking skills.
  • If there are 100+ jobs that is what I like to see. You should have no problem landing your first job in a reasonable amount of time.

Dev's

  • Go to dice.com and in job title search put Dev and put your city in location (or closest metro city you can commute to).
  • If there are less than 100 Dev jobs returned by the search, it will be very challenging and it will take much longer than 6 months to land your first job. I would recommend relocating.
  • If there are 100-300 jobs you should be able to land a job in a reasonable amount of time you will need to have above average networking skills.
  • If there are 300-800 jobs that is what I like to see. You should have no problem landing your first job in a reasonable amount of time.
  • Some areas have well over 1,000 jobs like: Los Angeles, Denver & DC. It will be much easier to land a job there. This is a gold mine area.
